Lee Jun-seok, the leader of the Reform New Party, strongly criticized that the ‘one-shot mentality’ and ‘prosecutorial approach’ established during former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s tenure have led the conservative camp to ruin.<\/p>\n
In an interview with the Dong-A Ilbo on the 10th, Lee stated, “Those who don’t understand politics have wielded power over conservatives and led them to failure.”<\/b><\/p>\n
Lee emphasized that the conservative camp needs to change its entire discourse structure, including theories about election fraud. He pointed out that unknown individuals posing as YouTubers are teaching the public, preaching like in churches, and infiltrating baseless stories reminiscent of Nicolas Maduro, suggesting that Trump would arrest President Lee Jae-myung. As a result, people who think deeply are disappearing from the conservative camp.<\/p>\n
He also criticized that after former President Park Geun-hye’s impeachment, conservatives relied solely on the prosecutorial approach and the reflexive benefits from rising real estate prices and inflation following the Cho Kuk incident, without any self-innovation or discourse on economy, education, or foreign policy and security. He stated that their only strategy was to use the prosecutorial approach to finish off their opponents.<\/p>\n

Lee continued, saying that the Yoon Suk Yeol administration was permeated with a one-shot mentality, believing that sending Lee Jae-myung to prison would solve everything, rather than focusing on competing with him. He defined this as an unconditional one-shot approach that excluded self-investment and learning.<\/p>\n
Regarding why conservatives fell into the one-shot mentality and prosecutorial approach, Lee analyzed that it’s difficult to remove these tendencies as they try to maintain their stagnant support base while aiming for party leadership. He stated that people who don’t understand, haven’t experienced, and don’t know how to solve problems through politics have taken power with a one-shot mentality, leading conservatives to ruin.<\/p>\n
As a way for conservatives to appeal to voters, Lee proposed ‘political reform.’ He said, “The ruling party inevitably leads policy-making. Therefore, the opposition should take the lead with the theme of political reform.” He added, “We know all the ways to dismantle vested interests. The problem is that we’re not doing it.”<\/p>\n
Regarding the proposal to weight votes by generation, gender, and region in party member voting, Lee explained that someone might have to put in 100 times more effort to secure one party member in Jeolla Province compared to other regions. He suggested that it might be more advantageous to campaign in Honam rather than squeezing a dry towel in North Gyeongsang Province if one wants to win the party convention.<\/p>\n
On the issue of conservative talent recruitment, Lee diagnosed that it’s not happening because the conservative talent pool has dried up. He said, “The political scene has become a place for people seeking a second career. I don’t think we’ll see any more recruitment of exceptional individuals.”<\/p>\n
Regarding the proposal by People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk to lower the voting age to 16, Lee expressed concern, saying, “It’s very dangerous when politics enters schools. If an irresponsible populist proposes to abolish exams, it could potentially nullify education policies.”<\/p>\n
Lee took a firm stance on the possibility of an alliance with the People Power Party. He stated that there’s no possibility of an alliance even if the People Power Party severs ties with former President Yoon Suk Yeol. He revealed that his heart ached the most when long-term preparations were wasted due to party leadership issues while running for election three times in Sanggye-dong.<\/p>\n
Regarding former People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon, Lee said, “I don’t know Han Dong-hoon. I don’t understand what grand cause led to this situation after he was the crown prince of the Yoon Suk Yeol administration.”<\/p>\n
He continued, “I understand there was a conflict. But wasn’t he the crown prince, the successor, even aiming for the regency position right after martial law was declared? It’s no different from saying ‘I was actually planning to fight for independence’ after doing well until August 15, 1945.” He drew a line, saying their philosophies don’t align.<\/p>\n
Regarding Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, Lee advised, “Mayor Oh needs to clarify ‘what he wants.’ If it’s not clear what he wants to do, even those who want to help him might be confused.”<\/p>\n

Lee said he’s not considering running for a gubernatorial position in the local elections. He explained that he regretted not being able to manage the party because he had to run as a candidate in the general election and presidential election after founding the Reform New Party.<\/p>\n
For the Reform New Party’s local election goals, Lee stated that taking the most progressive stance on political reform and having as many candidates as possible participate is the first task. He expressed hope for triple-digit numbers for local council members and a significant number of elected heads of local governments.<\/p>\n
Regarding the direction of opposition realignment, Lee emphasized the need for a party that completely changes the paradigm, with entirely different operating methods, opinion gathering, and decision-making structures.
