As prominent Western politicians, business leaders, and scholars become embroiled in the scandal surrounding the late billionaire sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Howard Rutnick, known as President Donald Trump’s “tariff czar,” now faces related allegations.<\/p>\n

On February 9, Politico reported that recently released U.S. Justice Department documents revealed a closer relationship between Rutnick and Epstein than previously acknowledged, leading to bipartisan calls for his resignation. Analysts widely believe this has increased President Trump’s political burden, given Rutnick’s key role in shaping tariff policy.<\/p>\n

Democrats are ramping up their offensive, accusing Rutnick of lying about his relationship with Epstein. Senator Adam Schiff stated, “Rutnick’s dishonesty about his business dealings with a convicted sex offender raises serious questions about his judgment and ethics. He is unfit to serve as Commerce Secretary and must resign immediately.”<\/p>\n

Other Democratic House members, including Robert Garcia, the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee investigating the Epstein case, are also demanding Rutnick’s resignation.<\/p>\n

Even within the Republican Party, some argue that Rutnick should step down to alleviate pressure on President Trump. Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) told CNN, “Frankly, it would be better for Rutnick to resign to ease the burden on President Trump.”<\/p>\n

James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, also indicated his willingness to speak with anyone who has information that could help achieve justice for the survivors, not ruling out the possibility of subpoenaing Rutnick.<\/p>\n

However, Comer added, “Addressing the committee’s outstanding subpoenas is the priority.” While bipartisan calls for Rutnick’s resignation or dismissal are growing, Politico suggests that neither scenario is likely to materialize immediately.<\/p>\n

White House Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated, “Secretary Rutnick and the entire Trump administration, including the Commerce Department, remain focused on delivering results for the American people.”<\/p>\n

The New York Times reported on February 7 that Rutnick’s name appeared in over 250 Justice Department documents related to Epstein, indicating that the two were neighbors in Manhattan’s Upper East Side and had regular interactions for at least 13 years. This contradicts Rutnick’s claim in a podcast interview last year that he “felt disgusted after meeting Epstein in 2005 and never met him again.” It appears Rutnick even visited Epstein’s notorious Caribbean villa in 2012. However, the documents suggest that while they occasionally met in person, they primarily communicated via email through their assistants, according to the NYT.<\/p>\n

The Epstein scandal continues to reverberate internationally. British King Charles III issued a statement today, expressing his “full support for the police as they consider whether to investigate” his brother, Prince Andrew, who faces allegations of maintaining a friendship with Epstein while committing various crimes. Andrew has been stripped of his royal titles and honors.<\/p>\n

Norwegian police searched the residence of high-ranking diplomats Mona Juul and Terje R\u00f8d-Larsen, who have been revealed to have close ties with Epstein. Epstein left 10 million USD (approximately 14.5 billion KRW) to the couple’s two children in his will. Former Prime Minister Thorbj\u00f8rn Jagland is also under police investigation, and Crown Princess Mette-Marit has come under scrutiny for her connections to Epstein.<\/p>\n
