An explosion at Hanwha Aerospace’s Daejeon facility on the morning of April 14 prompted Sejong-area politicians to extend condolences to the victims and their families.
Jo Sang-ho, the Democratic Party of Korea’s candidate for Sejong mayor, said, “I am deeply saddened by this tragic news from Daejeon, our neighboring city. I pray for the souls of those who lost their lives and offer my deepest sympathy to their families.”
He added, “I hope the injured recover quickly and that no further lives are lost.”
Choi Min-ho, the People Power Party’s candidate for Sejong mayor, said in a statement, “I bow my head in deep mourning for the victims who lost their precious lives in this sudden accident. I offer my sincere condolences to the families who lost loved ones in an instant.”
He urged that “now is a time for consolation rather than competition,” and called for a thorough investigation into the cause and for concrete safety measures to prevent recurrence.
Candidates for Sejong superintendent of education also expressed their sympathies.
Im Jeon-su said, “I am overwhelmed with grief at this heartbreaking accident at an ordinary workplace. I pray for those who died and extend my deepest condolences and sympathy to their families.”
Won Seong-su posted on his Facebook page, “I offer my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I hope every workplace in our society becomes a safe place where people can carry on their daily lives and livelihoods with confidence.”
Kang Mi-ae said, “I pray for the souls of those who died in this sudden accident and extend my deepest condolences and sympathy to the bereaved families. I am deeply troubled that such a tragic incident occurred at a workplace that should be safe.”
Meanwhile, candidates running in Sejong’s local elections suspended scheduled campaign dances and campaign songs for the day and decided to proceed with a subdued schedule, greeting citizens rather than holding festive events.
