On the final official day of campaigning, June 2, Choo Mi-ae, the Democratic Party’s candidate for governor of Gyeonggi Province, visited Yongin and made support for the semiconductor industry the centerpiece of her closing pitch as she tried to consolidate last-minute votes.
Incheon Ilbo reporting shows that at a rally at the Singal Five-Way Intersection in Yongin on June 2, Choo said, “Yongin holds the future of South Korea’s industry,” and urged, “For Yongin, we need a wise and excellent choice — Hyun Geun-taek must be elected.”
She referred to the planned Yongin national semiconductor industrial complex and SK Hynix’s industrial site, saying, “Semiconductors need water, power and personnel,” and stressing that no location in southern Gyeonggi — especially Yongin — offers a better site.
She added, “Semiconductors, designated as a national strategic and security industry, are inseparable from Yongin,” and insisted, “Once designated a national strategic industry, it will not leave Yongin.”
She raised her voice and said, “If we see any sign of a misguided decision, Hyun Geun-taek and I will be the first to step forward to stop it.”
Choo also pledged infrastructure support to nurture the semiconductor industry. “I have proposed amending the River Act to prevent water shortages, and we have comprehensive plans to address power supply issues,” she said. “We also have several proposals to partner with global companies to develop talent.”
“We must create conditions that attract world-class semiconductor talent to Yongin and keep domestic talent from leaving,” she said. “If Hyun Geun-taek draws up that blueprint, I, Choo Mi-ae, will immediately back it.”
Chants of Choo’s name continued at the site. Some passing cars briefly honked in time with the 2002 World Cup cheers in response.
Choo said, “I cannot win on my own. All 31 cities and counties must win together if the Lee Jae-myung administration is to deliver rapid, tangible results over its four-year term,” and she vowed, “I will develop Yongin into the heart of the global semiconductor industry.”
