Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on the 28th (local time) that he had ordered the military to secure control of 70% of the Gaza Strip’s territory. The operations have displaced many Gazans and concentrated them primarily along the coastline.
Reuters and CNN reported that Netanyahu, speaking at a meeting in a settlement in the occupied West Bank, said Israel is intensifying pressure on the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
He said, \”We currently control 60% of Gaza’s territory,\” noting that the figure has risen from 50%.
He added, \”My order is to expand that step by step, first to 70%,\” and said, \”We are pressuring Hamas from all directions.\”
Netanyahu described the occupied areas in Gaza, Syria and Lebanon as buffer zones intended to block potential attacks by armed groups since the war that began after Hamas’s October 2023 assault.
Palestinians say they view this as a strategy to permanently displace them, citing remarks by senior Israeli officials, including Defense Minister Katz, who have encouraged voluntary relocation from Gaza.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released a map it distributed to international aid organizations late last month showing it controls roughly 64% of Gaza’s territory.
The IDF has pulled back to the boundary known as the \”yellow line,\” set under last October’s truce with Hamas, and is now deployed in areas that cover about 53% of Gaza’s territory.
