[JoyNews24 reporter Lee Mi-young] BigBang singer Taeyang opened his 20th-anniversary project with a striking solo comeback centered on musical “essence” and the spirit of challenge.
Taeyang held a listening session on the afternoon of the 18th at the Cube Convention Center in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul to mark the release of his fourth full-length album, QUINTESSENCE. QUINTESSENCE is his first comeback in about three years since his second EP, Down to Earth, released in April 2023, and his first full studio album in roughly nine years since WHITE NIGHT in August 2017.

Taeyang said he has been nonstop this year. “I was busy preparing for Coachella and finishing the album,” he said. “I haven’t had a single day off since Coachella.”
Releasing a record on his birthday, the 18th, Taeyang said he felt a mix of emotions ahead of the release. “I worked on this album with more joy than ever,” he said. “I’m happy to give fans a nice gift on my birthday. After a year of preparation, it feels liberating to finally let the album out into the world.”
The album title, QUINTESSENCE, which means “essence” or “quintessence,” reflects Taeyang’s long-standing contemplation. He used the record to map a journey toward the most important — often invisible — values and to render that search in music. The album comprises 10 tracks that showcase Taeyang’s unmistakable artistic identity.
Explaining the title, Taeyang said, “I chose the word to mean essence and the core. A year ago, when I began making this album, ‘essence’ and ‘core’ lingered in my mind and my heart. I used that word as the title and drew a lot of inspiration from it. It was a process of finding the essence and figuring out how to capture it in my music.”
The title track, “LIVE FAST DIE SLOW,” features the highest BPM of any song Taeyang has released. It’s an intense, wild piece that pairs full-throttle momentum with his trademark soulful vocals.
Taeyang said, “I came at my own direction and pace, and I want to keep burning at this speed going forward. For this album, I wanted every song to feel like a title track, so choosing the tracks was difficult — I worried about it until the end.” He added that while writing the song he realized it suited him well. “During my solo tour two years ago, I decided I wanted to make the fastest, most exciting song,” he said, describing how he settled on the title track.

The record experiments with a range of sounds. Taeyang moved beyond house production to work with international producers; Tablo contributed to songwriting; label juniors ALLDAY PROJECT’s Tarzan and Woochan appear; and Australian pop star The Kid LAROI also contributes.
On working with new producers, Taeyang said he wanted collaborators who understood their legacy. “Producer Paul Blanco grew up listening to our music. He was a good fit and threw himself into the project as if he were making his own album,” Taeyang said.
On collaborating with Tarzan and Woochan, he said their debut and early performances reminded him of his own start. “I thought they’d bring that youthful texture we had at debut, so I asked them to sing verses. They worked so hard and helped raise the song’s quality. As for performing together, you can look forward to it,” he added.
Taeyang called this year a milestone: 20 years. “When I prepared this new album, I focused on ‘what is new while staying true to myself,'” he said. After two decades of music and activity, finding something genuinely new felt challenging. “I thought about what fresh moves I could make now, and those attempts are reflected on the album,” he said.
He also poured gratitude for longtime fans into the music. The album’s closing track, “4U,” carries Taeyang’s hopes for the future and a message of enduring, unending “forever.”
“I could stay active for 20 years because of the fans,” Taeyang said. “I felt that at Coachella, too. Looking back on 20 years felt miraculous,” he added, expressing thanks.
Beyond his solo comeback, Taeyang will remain busy with BigBang’s 20th-anniversary activities. He headlined Coachella in early April in the U.S., and BigBang will launch a world tour in August.
“I think I’ll get even busier after today. I want to be active without regrets,” he said. “This year I’ll show many sides of myself. I started the 20th-anniversary project as a solo artist, and I’ll meet fans in various ways with the BigBang members, so please look forward to it.”
Taeyang’s fourth studio album, QUINTESSENCE, and its title track, “LIVE FAST DIE SLOW,” were released on the 18th at 6 p.m. on various online music platforms.
