The K-pop group NewJeans is facing allegations that its hit song ‘How Sweet’ was plagiarized.
Billboard reported on May 8 (local time) that four individuals, including composer Audrey Amacost, filed a lawsuit seeking a share of royalties, alleging that NewJeans’s ‘How Sweet’ copied their demo, ‘One of a Kind.’
According to the report, Amacost and the others received an instrumental track from a publisher in January 2024 and were asked to write a topline—the lyrics and melody—to be considered as a candidate for a NewJeans song. They submitted material that was not selected and now claim the verse melody and the song’s structure closely resemble their work.
‘How Sweet’ is the title track from NewJeans’ double single released in May 2024. The song reached No. 15 on the Billboard Global 200 and No. 7 on the Billboard Global (excluding U.S.) chart, and Rolling Stone included it on its list of the ‘100 Best Songs of 2024.’
However, the production team involved denies the plagiarism claim. ADOR said on May 9 that Bana, who composed and produced the track, has denied any plagiarism. ADOR and the members said they will respond to the lawsuit based on Bana’s statement.
