How to Vacuum-Seal Without a Machine

Think a resealable bag will keep your groceries fresh forever? Not quite. A simple trick — submerging the bag in water — can actually more than double the storage life of many foods. Below are two easy, at-home ways to get that near-vacuum seal without a machine.
1. Submerge the resealable bag

Grab a double-sealed zip-top bag (think Ziploc-style). Put the food you want to preserve inside.

Seal the bag almost all the way, leaving a small gap. That opening is where the air will escape.

Fill a large basin or bowl with water. Slowly lower the bag into the water, keeping the small opening above the surface so no water gets inside. The water pressure will push the air out, creating a vacuum-like seal.
Quickly finish sealing the bag while that opening is still above water.

Voila — you’ve got a vacuum-like seal without any equipment. With the air removed, your food will stay fresher than it would in a loosely closed bag.

Use this trick for veggies, meats, and other perishables to keep them flavorful and fresh for longer.
2. Use a straw

The second method is super simple: the trusty straw. Put the food in the bag and close it almost fully, leaving a tiny gap. Insert a straw through that gap, suck out as much air as you can, then quickly seal the bag.

This works especially well for dry items like sliced fruit or baked goods. For raw meat or anything with liquid, the water submersion method is safer and more reliable.

Two quick, budget-friendly hacks for vacuum-sealing at home — no special equipment required. Try them and enjoy fresher ingredients with less waste!
