Actor Lee Byung-hun pinpointed why Korean content has captivated audiences worldwide.
Lee recently appeared on CNN’s original documentary series ‘K-Everything,’ where he spoke candidly about the global reach of Korean content and reflected on his own career.
‘K-Everything’ is a four-part documentary that explores the forces behind the global rise of Korean culture. Actor-director Daniel Dae Kim hosts and serves as executive producer. The series examines K-pop, film and television, food, beauty and other facets of Korean culture.
Asked about the recent surge in popularity, Lee said reporters in both Korea and the U.S. often pose the same question. He pointed to unpredictable plotlines as one key factor. He also discussed the cultural sentiment known as ‘heung,’ describing it as “a positive, buoyant energy” that seems to come from the spirit or soul. That distinctive feeling and vitality, he suggested, help Korean works connect with global audiences. He cited the international buzz around ‘K-pop Demon Hunters’ as an example of that energy creating widespread resonance.
The discussion also turned to Lee’s filmography and his journey as an actor. He recalled meeting the film Joint Security Area (JSA) at a time when his subsequent projects had not met expectations, calling it significant both commercially and artistically.
Daniel Dae Kim described A Bittersweet Life as his favorite film, praising it as stylish yet brutal. Lee echoed that sentiment, naming A Bittersweet Life as the work he is most proud of.
Lee also shared his thoughts on the future of the Korean entertainment industry. Rather than trying to guess what audiences will like, he argued, creators should hone their own storytelling methods and cultivate their unique energy. He believes that a persistent commitment to those qualities will sustain international interest and affection.
Meanwhile, Lee is currently filming the Disney+ original series ‘Koreans,’ which is expected to spark another global wave of interest.
