[MyDaily = Reporter Han So-hee] Ryu Seung-ryong won the Grand Prize in the broadcast category for the drama Manager Kim: The Story of a Big-Corporation Employee Who Owns a Home in Seoul. Onstage, he grew emotional as he remembered longtime colleague Yoo Hae-jin, who shared those lean years with him.
The 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards were held the afternoon of the 8th at COEX Hall D in Gangnam, Seoul.
Ryu recalled sticking up posters with Yoo Hae-jin at a New York theater three decades ago and working part-time at a factory in Jochiwon. Standing side by side now to accept the Grand Prize, he said, was deeply moving. He added that the celebratory Nanta performance stirred memories of his younger self and brought him to tears.
He spoke warmly about the series itself. Ryu described the story as following a man in his 50s who loses the hard-won standing he had climbed to and then falls. The subject could have felt heavy or been sidelined as a drama, he said, but he thanked JTBC and SLL for boldly creating a space for empathy and consolation.
Ryu added a deeper interpretation of the character he played, Kim Naksu. \”Like the name Naksu implies, I once thought falling water meant an end,\” he said. \”But it becomes a stream, then a river, and ultimately flows into the sea. What revived him was one line from his wife Hajin: ‘You worked hard, Manager Kim.’\”
\”Helping someone doesn’t require grand gestures,\” he continued. \”A sincere word, a small act of empathy, or a little courage can be a tremendous gift to another person.\”
He thanked the cast and crew. \”I appreciate the director and writers, the brilliant staff, and the actors who rehearsed with the intensity of theater,\” he said, naming Myung Se-bin and Yoo Seung-mok among those he wanted to acknowledge.
He closed by thanking his family and viewers, and offering himself a moment of comfort. \”I sincerely thank my parents, my wife, my children, and the viewers,\” Ryu said. \”Seung-ryong, you did well. And to all the Naksu across the country: be happy.\” His words left a lasting impression.
Meanwhile, the Baeksang Arts Awards, now in its 62nd year, were established in 1965 to promote the development of Korean popular culture and the arts. Traditionally honoring television, film, and theater, this year the ceremony added a musical category to mark the 60th anniversary of Korean musical theater.
