BLACKPINK’s Lisa is poised to reaffirm K-pop’s global reach when she performs at the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
The Athletic, a sports outlet under The New York Times umbrella, reported on the 8th (local time) that Lisa has signed a performance agreement with FIFA for the tournament.
Because Canada, the United States and Mexico are co-hosting the event, organizers have planned three separate, high-profile opening ceremonies—one in each country.
Lisa is scheduled to appear at the opening ceremony for the U.S. vs. Paraguay match at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. She’s expected to share the bill with international pop star Katy Perry, rapper Future and DJ Sanjoy, delivering a vivid, show-stopping set.
Lineups in the other host cities are also notable. In Toronto, Michael Bublé and Alanis Morissette will open the festivities, while Mexico’s Estadio Azteca will feature rock band Maná and singer Alejandro Fernández. Performance slots are roughly 13 minutes each for the U.S. and Canada, and about 16 minutes 30 seconds for Mexico.
Perhaps most significant is the presence of a K-pop artist on such a massive global stage. After BTS member Jungkook captured worldwide attention with the official 2022 Qatar World Cup soundtrack “Dreamers,” a K-pop female soloist will carry the torch this time.
